Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) & Misconduct Victim Advocacy

How we help

Services we offer

Services we offer

Empowerment Advocate Alaska provides direct advocacy services to victims and families affected by officer-involved shootings (OIS) and officer misconduct. We are the only organization in Alaska providing direct services specifically for OIS and officer misconduct cases.

Our advocates walk alongside families, helping them navigate complex systems, understand their rights and options, communicate with agencies, and help clients stay informed throughout investigations and legal proceedings. We also assist with documenting case-related communications and information, providing families with a clear record they can use if they pursue civil legal action.

We are committed to ensuring victims and families have support, information, and a voice throughout the process.

The direct advocacy services of Empowerment Advocate Alaska are completely free.

Education & Training

Understanding Officer-Involved Shootings: The Process, and Their Impact on Families and Communities

This is an online, self-paced education and training series from Empowerment Advocate Alaska designed to help families, community members, advocates, and professionals better understand officer-involved shootings (OIS) and what happens after an incident occurs.

An officer-involved shooting can affect far more than the moments surrounding the incident. Families may be left trying to understand investigations, multiple agencies, reports, evidence, timelines, legal processes, and unanswered questions while also coping with grief, trauma, and uncertainty. Communities may have questions about what happened, how the process works, and where accountability and support fit into the picture.

This course series breaks down the OIS process into understandable, accessible information and explores the experiences and impacts that often extend beyond the incident itself.

We offer two learning pathways:

Family & Community Education — Free

Free modules are designed for OIS surviving family members, community members, and anyone who wants to better understand officer-involved shootings. These modules focus on providing clear, plain-language information about the OIS process, what families and communities may experience, and what to expect as a case moves forward.

Professional Training Workshops — Fee-Based

Additional modules are offered as interactive workshops for professionals who work with OIS-impacted families or want to strengthen their understanding of officer-involved shootings. These workshops go beyond information-sharing and provide practical tools, strategies, and opportunities to apply what participants learn to real-world situations.

Fee-based workshops include certificates of completion and are intended for professionals such as victim advocates, social workers, behavioral health providers, attorneys, Tribal and community service providers, educators, and others who support families and communities impacted by OIS. *Tribal entities and Tribal community service providers will be offered sliding-scale fees to help ensure cost does not limit their ability to participate in our workshops and trainings.
