The crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) continues to impact Indigenous communities across Alaska. Families searching for justice and healing often face numerous obstacles, including legal complexities, law enforcement communication challenges, and a lack of direct service assistance. Our MMIP Victim Advocacy program is dedicated to supporting families and communities by providing guidance and support throughout their journey for justice.
We work closely with families to offer essential support, helping facilitate communication with law enforcement and guiding them through the criminal justice process in MMIP cases. We also support families who believe their loved one’s death was suspicious and not properly investigated, resulting in the cause of death being ruled as accidental, overdose, or undetermined.
The services of Empowerment Advocate Alaska are completely free.
This is an online, self-paced education and training series from Empowerment Advocate Alaska designed to help families, community members, advocates, and professionals better understand Missing and Murdered Indigenous people cases.
An MMIP case can affect far more than the moment a loved one goes missing or is killed. Families may be left navigating investigations, multiple agencies, reports, evidence, timelines, searches, legal processes, and unanswered questions while also coping with grief, trauma, and uncertainty. Communities may have questions about what happened, how the process works, and where support and advocacy fit in.
This course series breaks down the MMIP process into understandable, accessible information and explores the experiences and impacts that extend beyond the initial report or loss.
We offer two learning pathways:
Family & Community Education — Free
Free modules are designed for MMIP surviving family members, community members, and anyone who wants to better understand MMIP cases. These modules focus on providing clear, plain-language information about the MMIP process, what families and communities may experience, and what to expect as a case moves forward.
Professional Training Workshops — Fee-Based
Additional modules are offered as interactive workshops for professionals who work with MMIP-impacted families or want to strengthen their understanding of MMIP cases. These workshops go beyond information-sharing and provide practical tools, strategies, and opportunities to apply what participants learn to real-world situations.
Fee-based workshops include certificates of completion and are intended for professionals such as victim advocates, social workers, behavioral health providers, attorneys, Tribal and community service providers, educators, and others who support families and communities impacted by MMIP. *Tribal entities and Tribal community service providers will be offered sliding-scale fees to help ensure cost does not limit their ability to participate in our workshops and trainings.
